Calling all potential Gabbaim and those wanting to learn more about the Torah Service
Bet Torah will be holding a second, encore Gabbai study session for those who are currently serving as a Gabbai and for those who would like to serve as a Gabbai or are just interested in learning about the Torah Service. We will cover the history of the Torah Service, study the law involved in Torah reading, review the customs and traditions at Bet Torah, and cover the roles and responsibilities of the Gabbai Rishon and Gabbai Sheini.
Potential Gabbaim must of course be familiar with the Torah service, read Hebrew to a degree that will allow him or her to ensure that the Torah reader has not made a mistake or mispronounced a word, have a good understanding of what is being read, although fluency in Hebrew is not a requirement, be a kind, caring person and supportive person (many Torah readers are incredibly nervous and need to know that there is a supporter/helper, not a critic, on their side), and have a good dose of sechel.
We had our first session on July 20th and will do an encore session later in the summer for those interested but who could not make the first session. If you would like to join our band of merry men and women who guard and maintain the Torah Service, or if you are just interested in learning please contact Mike Gordon at [email protected] or 914.232.9500.
