Screenwriter and author Rob Leshem is the creator of Valley of Tears, called Sh‘at Ne’ila (the hour of the “closing of the gate,” the final service of the Yom Kippur liturgy) in Israel, an Israeli series now reaching American audiences on HBO. Inspired by true events, Valley of Tears is a ten-part miniseries depicting the 1973 Yom Kippur War, in which Israel was nearly annihilated. It tells four emotional and highly personal stories of individuals swept away from their loved ones by the ravages of war, four parallel plotlines, intertwined together into one climactic battle. The show received accolades for its innovation in recreating battle scenes, and holds the record for highest budget for any TV show produced in Israel to date.
